KABATAAN Partylist Representative Sarah Elago and student leaders from different universities pushed for free public education in a press conference at the House of Representatives, September 29.
The youth delegates pushed for the restoration of higher budget for maintenance and operating expenses of 35 state universities and colleges for the year 2017.
They attested that many teenagers will be able to study, graduate and have a degree if the tuition fee for state universities and colleges in the country is free.
It can be recalled that earlier in July, Sen. Bam Aquino has filed a bill seeking the abolishment of tuition fees in state colleges and universities.
As the chairman of the Committee on Education of the 17th Congress, Aquino proposed the Free Education in State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) Bill to widen the access of indigent Filipino students to quality education.
“In line with the mandate of our Constitution, the State must uphold the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels. This bill seeks to make tertiary education in all State Universities and Colleges free of tuition for its students and fully subsidized by government,” he had said. By Mary Angelique Tacata
